Øster Hurup – the gem of the eastcoast
The inhabitants of Øster Hurup and the immediate neighbourhood have formerly lived by agriculture and fishing. In the Middle Ages and all the way up through the 19th century there was a massive fishing of herring going on in the area which particularly in the Middle Ages helped to supply big parts of the Northern and Eastern Jutland together with the kings court, army and fleet with herring.
In 1936 the harbour of Øster Hurup was inaugurated. The harbour resulted in a great upturn in fishery and in industry affiliated with fishing.
During the 1980’s fishery disappeared and in 1990 the marina was laid out.
In 2005 private investors took the initiative for an expansion of the harbour with new and modern housing.
Today tourism forms the majority of the industry in the city. It all started in the inter-war period and after World War II a lot of holiday cottages were built both north and south of Øster Hurup. With tourism came a number of service trades like for example camping sites, small businesses together with pubs, discos and restaurants.
Today the city is quickly progressing concentrating the attention on child-friendly beaches and an exclusive harbour milieu where tourist and the chamber of commerce put their backs into making our seaside city even better for you and your family.
If you’re not interested in just spending your holiday sunbathing on our highly child-friendly beach Øster Hurup has so much more to offer. You can go hiking in Lille Vildmose, dive by the harbour, bike ride, go horseback riding and bowl or visit the subtropical indoor water complex.
In July there are a whole lot of activities in the city consisting of concerts, ox party, jumble sale, hawker's market, making of sweets and other entertainment like face painting and performing magicians and we’re sure that there will be several activities that fit you and your family.
In the evening the many restaurants make the city seethe with holiday atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for choosing between Danish, Greek, and Italian or Oriental food.
